Eschew Expensive Equipment

When preparing for an investigation, it is easy to get caught up in the marketing spin behind expensive, specialized gadgets. But looking past the sales pitches usually reveals that some of the most effective tools for gathering raw evidence are just ordinary, everyday items repurposed with a little ingenuity. Step away from high-priced equipment and think about it differently.

Here is a breakdown of the practical devices used to keep fieldwork accurate, organized, and uncomplicated.

Notebooks and Journals
  • Notebooks and Journals — Some electronic devices record the data to an SD card, but nothing replaces hard copy documentation. Keeping paper notebooks on hand allows for the immediate manual logging of physical data, EMF spikes, timelines, and raw on-site observations before the initial memory fades.

  • Lighted Pen — Writing notes in a pitch-black room is notoriously difficult. Using an ink pen with a low-intensity, built-in light source at the tip allows for continuous writing in dark environments without needing to turn on a flashlight — which would blow out night-vision gear or ruin ongoing video recordings.

Theremin
  • Theremin — Originally built as a musical instrument, a theremin is incredibly useful for spotting proximity-based anomalies. Because its audio output responds directly to electromagnetic fields, any subtle energy shift or presence within a foot or two of the antenna alters the pitch immediately — giving a clear audio cue without requiring direct contact. A REM Pod works under the same theory, but can only detect a field change a few inches away. An actual Theremin will cost hundreds of dollars, but you can get a junior theremin for around $50. Even less if you are willing to put a kit together yourself.

AAC Talking Board
  • AAC Talking Board — Using an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device or pre-programmed talking board instead of a Spirit Box. Laying out buttons that speak single words when pressed allows for an alternative electronic interface during a communication session. And the entities don't have to manipulate any frequencies —  just touch a button. Very inexpensive talking boards can be found for less than $10. If you don't think an entity can press buttons, you can find a program that does the same thing with the capacitance touch detection on the screen of a cell phone or tablet.

Bicycle Alarm
  • Bicycle Alarm — Monitoring large or multi-room buildings is always a challenge. A standard bicycle alarm makes an excellent, budget-friendly movement detector. Placed on the floor or furniture, it acts as a loud and clear alarm to monitor distant areas. You can also arm it and leave it in your equipment bag if you are worried about somebody stealing your stuff.

Pet Training Clicker
  • Pet Training Clicker — When running multiple cameras and audio recorders, syncing files during post-investigation editing can be a difficult process. a clapboard is normally used and they are expensive. A cheap pet training clicker serves as a perfect pocket clapboard. Triggering a sharp, loud click creates an instant, distinct audio-visual spike across every active device, making it simple to line up the timelines perfectly. To do this you will need to record audio in the video files, even if you plan to replace it with better quality audio.

Aerosol Water Spray
  • Aerosol Water Spray — A simple water mist works as a detector. It maps out subtle draft patterns in quiet rooms and catches active laser grids to instantly reveal laser lines. If you don't want to pump a mister with your hand, you can get plain water in aerosol cans. You probably should avoid doing this in museums and libraries though.

Door Handle Covers
  • Door Handle Covers — Placing a karaoke microphone cover over door handles gives other people an unmistakable warning. It lets the rest of the team know that the room behind the door is actively undergoing a recording session and must not be disturbed. They look like a drawstring bag, only with elastic cord that will stretch onto a doorknob.

Focusing on functional items rather than brand names turns simple hardware into a reliable field setup. Keeping methods organized, documentation clear, and gear adaptable is what ultimately separates a serious investigation from just a walk in the dark.
